Paws and Paths: Exploring the Bauer Unit at Guadalupe River State Park

Explore the natural beauty of the Bauer Unit with a guided dog walk led by park volunteer Ed and B.A.R.K. Ranger Baxter. This approximately two-mile hike offers an opportunity to enjoy the outdoors with your canine companion while learning about the area’s local flora, fauna, and geology. Ed is knowledgeable about the natural surroundings, and participants are encouraged to ask questions along the way.

Friendly dogs are welcome but must remain on a leash no longer than six feet throughout the walk. Participants should wear outdoor clothing and sturdy hiking shoes, dress for the weather, and bring water for themselves and their dogs, dog waste bags, and sun protection. There are no restroom facilities or water fountains at the Bauer Unit, and visitors should pack out everything they bring in.

The walk begins promptly at 9 am and ends at 11 am. Participants should meet in the Bauer Unit parking lot at 8:45 am. The event is free with park admission, which costs $7 for adults; children 12 and under enter free. Exact cash or a Texas State Parks Pass can be used at the self-pay station, and reservations can also be made through Texas State Parks Reservations.

Advance registration is required through the online registration form. The Bauer Unit gate opens at 8 am, and the entry code on the keypad works only between 8 am and 10 pm.

To reach the Bauer Unit from Guadalupe River State Park, turn right onto Highway 46 from Park Road 31 and travel three miles before turning right onto FM 3351. Continue approximately 3.5 miles and turn right onto Edge Falls Road. After 2.4 miles, turn right onto Acker Road and continue 2.2 miles to the entrance. Searching for “Bauer Unit” in Google Maps is also recommended.

For ADA accommodations, submit a request through the accessibility request form or email accessibility@tpwd.texas.gov at least 30 days in advance. Park programs are subject to change or cancellation due to inclement weather.

Upcoming dates include November 8 and December 13, 2026, and January 10, February 21, March 14, and April 11, 2027. Each walk runs from 9 to 11 am.
