Just about an hour from Boerne and an hour from Austin, Johnson City is packed with surprises. This small Hill Country town may look quaint, but you can easily fill a full day here with history, food, coffee, and even a science adventure.
We recently took a day trip and had a blast. So here’s our complete Johnson City day trip itinerary… feel free to steal it!
The Science Mill

Address: 101 S Ladybird Lane, Johnson City, TX 78636
Start your morning at the Science Mill, the most unique children’s museum in Texas. Housed in a historic 1880s mill, this place has been transformed into a futuristic playground of science, tech, and imagination. With 50+ interactive exhibits featuring robots, AR, kinetic art, a 3D movie theater and outdoor space, it’s fun for both kids and adults.
The Science Mill is bilingual, hands-on, and built with a mission to spark curiosity. If you have kids (or just want to nerd out yourself), this is a must. We recommend the trip for this spot alone!
Texas Vintage Motorcycle Museum

Address: 100 N Nugent Ave, Johnson City, TX 78636
Just across the street from the Science Mill is the Texas Vintage Motorcycle Museum. This hidden gem showcases bikes from the 1950s, ’60s, and ’70s, all beautifully restored and on display. It’s been featured on The Texas Bucket List and makes for a fascinating stop, even if you’re not a hardcore motorcycle fan.
The museum is open Thursday through Sunday, 11 am to 6 pm.
Pecan Street Brewing

Address: 106 E Pecan Dr, Johnson City, TX 78636
We always try to hit a local brewery when we’re visiting a town. And after the first two stops, we were ready for lunch. And Pecan Street Brewing was the perfect stop.
This local brewpub is tucked just off the main drag and serves hand-crafted beer brewed on-site, along with cocktails and Texas wines. The food is just as good, with brick-oven pizzas, fresh salads, burgers, and southern favorites like their Sweet Pecan Chicken. It’s casual, family-friendly, and a perfect spot to refuel before the afternoon.
We had the burger, and it was legit. This is a family-friendly spot as well.
The Old Lumber Yard

Address: 209 E Main St, Johnson City, TX 78636
After lunch, head over to The Old Lumber Yard. Once a working lumberyard, it’s now a mix of restaurants, boutique shops, antiques, and even an ice cream stop. The shady courtyard and backyard stage make it a fun place to wander, and the renovations have turned it into one of the coolest hangout spots in town.
There’s an ice cream spot there, as well as a playground in the back for the kids.
Lyndon B. Johnson National Historic Park

Address: 100 Ladybird Lane, Johnson City, TX 78636
You can’t visit Johnson City without stopping at the Lyndon B. Johnson National Historic Park. This site tells the story of our 36th president, from his ancestors all the way to his final resting place at the LBJ Ranch. Walk the grounds, explore the visitor center, and take in the exhibits and memorabilia that give one of the most complete pictures of any American president. The park is open daily from 9 am to 5 pm, except major holidays.
In particular, the visitor center is super cool. It’s basically a small museum. We spent a good 30 minutes or so walking around and looking at everything.
Johnson City Coffee Co.

Address: 108 W Main St, Johnson City, TX 78636
We also always try to find a local coffee spot when we visit a city. So before heading home, we grabbed a coffee at Johnson City Coffee Co. to caffeinate for the drive back. This local shop serves up a pretty solid cappuccino.
The shaded patio is perfect for sunny days, while the cozy indoor seating offers Wi-Fi and charging stations. They also host rotating food trucks, so you might find something sweet or savory to pair with your drink.
I went with a cappuccino and a chocolate chip cookie for a winning road trip send-off.
There you have it! We started our day at the Science Mill around 10 am and wrapped up by 3 pm, heading home with full bellies, tired feet, and plenty of stories.
Small-town vibes, big-time fun. Save this itinerary for your next day trip.
