Nearly every building downtown is on the National Register of Historic Places, giving the town a timeless charm. Be sure to visit the wineries (Singing Water is one of the most highly rated in the US!), roadside attractions like the Cartoon Saloon, and hidden gem parks like James Kiehl River Bend Park.

Johnson City
The boyhood home of Lyndon B. Johnson is only about an hour from Boerne. This small town is quaint but has a lot of cool stuff to do. From the Science Mill children’s museum to the Vintage Motorcycle museum, you can easily pack a full day of activities in before heading home.

Fredericksburg
Fredericksburg is probably the most well-known (and highly-traveled) hill country town and is about 45 minutes away from Boerne. This historic German town is known for its wineries, museums, and festivals. Explore the National Museum of the Pacific War, visit Lyndon B. Johnson’s ranch, or browse the many art galleries and shops. Don’t leave without stopping by Wildseed Farms, where you can walk among vibrant wildflower fields.
Also, Luckenbach is just down the road, offering live country music in a rustic, legendary setting. Check out our trip there below.
Kerrville
Nestled along the Guadalupe River with hills surrounding the town, Kerrville offers a mix of culture and outdoor fun. The Museum of Western Art and Kerr Arts & Cultural Center showcase the town’s artistic side, while the scenic River Trail is perfect for biking or walking. Just a little further west, Ingram is home to an artist colony and the quirky Stonehenge II, a near-replica of the famous monument in England. And on your way out, consider stopping off at Camp Verde for some shopping, a meal, and some interesting history.
Check out our day trip to Kerrville below.
Bandera
The self-proclaimed “Cowboy Capital of the World,” Bandera is where you go to experience the Wild West. Ride horseback at a dude ranch, visit the Frontier Times Museum, or catch live country music at Arkey Blue’s Silver Dollar Saloon. St. Stanislaus Catholic Church, one of the oldest in Texas, offers a glimpse into the area’s Polish heritage.
There are also some great outdoor spots, bars, restaurants, and more. Check out our last trip below.
Sisterdale
A short drive north brings you to Sisterdale, a tiny town with deep German roots. Stop by Sister Creek Vineyards to sample some fantastic Texas wines in a rustic setting. The Marlowe Candle Company offers handcrafted scents, while the Sisterdale Dance Hall still hosts lively events. It’s a great place to slow down and soak up some small-town charm.
And if you’re lucky, you’ll catch a fun small town event. Check out the BBQ we attended at their Volunteer Fire Department!
