The Tallest Flyover in San Antonio Is Finally Open—What It Means for Boerne Travelers

For months, getting from Boerne to San Antonio has been a nightmare, especially on weekends. Construction at the I-10 and Loop 1604 interchange brought closures, traffic jams, and plenty of frustration, leaving many of us thinking twice about heading into the city. But there’s good news: the first major flyover ramp at this interchange is now open.

This new ramp connects eastbound Loop 1604 to westbound I-10 toward Boerne, aiming to improve traffic flow and reduce congestion in one of the busiest areas of San Antonio. Rising a jaw-dropping 123 feet off the ground, it’s not just functional—it’s now the tallest highway structure in San Antonio and one of the tallest in the nation.

The flyover is part of the massive Loop 1604 North Expansion Project, which includes plans for a fully directional, five-level interchange. It’s all part of the Texas Clear Lanes initiative, designed to tackle the state’s most congested areas.

While this milestone is a step in the right direction (and the first real visible sign of progress), construction in the area isn’t finished yet, so expect ongoing lane closures and traffic shifts.

For Boerne residents, it could mean the trip back from San Antonio will get a bit easier.

Stay tuned for updates as more improvements come online, and remember to check current road conditions before heading into town. But for now, let’s celebrate – Boerne travelers, the road ahead just got a little easier!
