Sawyer stepped into the role following the departure of former head coach Che Hendrix, who left Boerne for a position at the University of Arkansas. After years as the Greyhounds’ defensive coordinator, Sawyer was promoted by Boerne ISD earlier this year and quickly made his mark.
The Greyhounds responded with an outstanding season, battling their way back to the state semifinals and establishing themselves once again as one of the top programs in the region. That team-wide success ultimately led to district recognition at multiple levels.

A SEASON DEFINED BY TEAM SUCCESS
Coach Sawyer’s Coach of the Year honor reflects more than just a strong debut season — it speaks to the collective effort of the entire Greyhounds program. From coaching staff to players, Boerne’s performance throughout the year showcased discipline, consistency, and resilience on both sides of the ball.
The Greyhounds’ deep playoff run and competitive play week after week set the tone for a season that delivered results when it mattered most.
PLAYERS OF THE YEAR & ALL-DISTRICT HONOREES ANNOUNCED
Boerne players also claimed the district’s top individual awards. Grant Sweeney was named Offensive Player of the Year after a dominant season under center, while Blake Burkholder earned Defensive Player of the Year honors for anchoring a Greyhound defense that consistently shut down opponents.
