The Cowboy Capital of the World—Just 30 Minutes from Boerne
If you’ve lived in Boerne for any amount of time, you’ve probably heard people talk about Bandera. But if you haven’t actually made the trip, it’s worth it.
Just about 30 minutes away, Bandera feels like stepping into old-school Texas. Cowboy hats, honky tonks, live music, and places that haven’t changed much in the best way possible.
Presented by Honda of Boerne

You may have already seen construction taking shape along I-10, and now it’s official. Honda of Boerne is joining The Boerne Life as a partner as they work toward a September 2026 opening.
Honda of Boerne broke ground last year and is owned by the Pohanka Automotive Group, a family-owned company that’s been around since 1919. As we’ve reported, they’ve been working closely with the City of Boerne throughout the development process and are already hiring ahead of opening. You can learn more by clicking the button below.
Here’s how to spend a full day out there.
Start with a classic at OST Restaurant
Located at 311 Main Street, OST (Old Spanish Trail) Restaurant is the oldest continuously operating restaurant in Bandera, and it absolutely feels like it.
This is the kind of place where you go all in on comfort food—chicken fried steak, big breakfasts, and classic Texas plates. There’s even a John Wayne room inside, which tells you everything you need to know about the vibe.
Step into the Bandera General Store
Right down the road at 306 Main Street, the Bandera General Store is part gift shop, part time machine.
The highlight is the old-fashioned soda fountain serving up Blue Bell ice cream, along with shelves full of Texas goods and souvenirs. It’s one of those stops that’s just fun, no matter your age.
Grab coffee at Cowgirl Coffee Company
Located upstairs at TJ’s @ The Old Forge (807 Main Street), Cowgirl Coffee Company is a cozy, Western-themed coffee shop that’s perfect for a mid-day break.
They serve specialty coffees, teas, and pastries in a laid-back space that feels very Bandera. It’s a great place to recharge before heading to your next stop.
Learn the history at Frontier Times Museum
At 510 13th Street, the Frontier Times Museum is one of the more unique museums you’ll come across.
It’s packed with artifacts that tell the story of Bandera and the Texas frontier, from cowboy history to some truly quirky exhibits. It’s not your typical museum—in a good way.
Check out dinosaurs at the Bandera Natural History Museum
Located at 267 Old San Antonio Road, this is a surprisingly cool stop, especially if you’ve got kids with you.
The museum features life-sized dinosaur replicas, animal displays, and a mix of natural history and art that makes it worth the visit.
Spend some time on the Medina River
Head over to Bandera City Park at 1102 Maple Street for a little time outdoors.
The park sits right along the Medina River and offers spots for swimming, fishing, picnicking, and just relaxing. It’s a great way to slow things down for a bit during the day.
Wrap it up with live music and a cold drink
When the sun starts going down, Bandera really comes alive.
Arkey Blue’s Silver Dollar at 308 Main Street is the oldest continuously operating honky tonk in Texas. It’s about as authentic as it gets, with live country music and a no-frills atmosphere.
A few doors down, 11th Street Cowboy Bar (307 11th Street) is another must-stop. It’s known for live music, dancing, and even a “bring your own meat” steak night where you grill your own dinner.
The bottom line
Bandera isn’t trying to be trendy, and that’s exactly why people love it.
It’s simple, it’s authentic, and it’s one of the easiest and most fun day trips you can take from Boerne.
If it’s been a while—or you’ve never been—it might be time to change that.
