The holiday season isn’t the only thing lighting up Boerne this weekend. The Geminid Meteor Shower, one of the year’s most spectacular celestial events, is set to peak Friday, December 13th and Saturday, December 14th, with the potential to see up to 100 meteors per hour.
If you live in the darker areas of Kendall County, this could be your chance to witness something truly breathtaking. The meteors will begin around 9 or 10 p.m. and continue into the early morning hours, so bundle up and get ready for a dazzling show. Although the nearly full moon may make dimmer meteors harder to see, the brighter Geminids should still provide a memorable display.
For the best experience, head to a dark location away from city lights, turn off all outdoor lighting, and allow your eyes 20-30 minutes to adjust to the dark. The meteors will appear to radiate from the constellation Gemini, but you don’t need to look in any specific direction—just lie back, relax, and enjoy the view.
The Geminid Meteor Shower occurs every December and is unique among meteor showers as it originates from an asteroid, 3200 Phaethon, rather than a comet. This makes it one of the brightest and most reliable shows of the year.
