What Is A Hope for Heroes Greeting?

If you’ve ever seen a crowd gathered at The Kendall on a Saturday morning — breakfast tacos in hand, coffee steaming, a sense of anticipation in the air — you may have stumbled upon a Hope for Heroes Greeting. Wondering what that is? Let’s take a look.

What It Is

Hope for Heroes Greetings are heartfelt community events where Boerne residents come together to welcome out-of-town first responders visiting for a well-deserved retreat. These heroes are offered a free night’s stay at The Kendall, local gift cards to enjoy downtown, and an in-room gift basket courtesy of Texas Gourmet Pantry.

But more than that, they’re met with open arms, cheering voices, and emotional encouragement from people who simply want to say, “We see you. And we’re grateful.”

The event begins with locals — often including law enforcement families, business owners, and residents — gathering for breakfast tacos and fellowship at one of the meeting spaces in the Kendall Inn. Then, once everyone is assembled, the surprise moment comes: the out-of-town heroes are escorted in to a round of applause, hugs, prayers, and words of appreciation.

Why It Matters

Many of the heroes brought in are going through hard times. Some are dealing with trauma. Others are exhausted from the pressures of the job. Hope for Heroes offers them a pause — and sometimes, a turning point.

In the words of one recent guest:

“My wife and I can’t express enough how an experience like that really helps you remember how many good people there are out there and it restores faith in humanity.

The fact that so many folks showed up to greet and care for strangers is something neither of us will ever forget…

The kindness of everyone involved will always stay with us.”

Another letter from a peer support officer with Austin PD puts it plainly:

“The weekends in Boerne have given officers and their families hope that things can get better.

Hope for Heroes Texas has helped inspire officers to have the courage to get help with thoughts of suicide, treatment for alcoholism, marriage counseling, and to get back in church.

To put it more directly — Hope for Heroes has saved careers, marriages, souls, and lives.”

How You Can Be Part of It

The next Hope for Heroes Greeting takes place Friday, April 26 from 9 to 11 am at The Kendall, 128 W Blanco Rd, Boerne. The event is free and open to anyone who wants to attend.

Come grab a taco, drink some coffee, meet your neighbors, and help give a warm Boerne welcome to the men and women who protect and serve — often without thanks.
