Free Resource to Trace Your Family Tree in Boerne

Free Resource to Trace Your Family Tree in Boerne

Just a block off Main Street in downtown Boerne is one of the most quietly impressive resources in the Hill Country, and it’s completely free to use.

It’s called The Family History Place, and it’s operated by the Genealogical Society of Kendall County. Whether your family has deep Texas roots or your ancestors lived halfway around the world, this public research center exists to help you trace your lineage, build a family tree, and uncover stories you may have never known.

And here’s the part most people don’t realize: you don’t need experience, special training, or even local ties to Boerne to use it.

What the Family History Place Does

The Family History Place is a hands-on genealogy research center staffed by knowledgeable volunteers who love helping people figure out where they come from. Visitors can work one-on-one with volunteers to learn how to trace ancestors, organize information, and create a proper genealogical chart.

Through a special partnership with the Family History Library in Salt Lake City, the center is designated as an official FamilySearch Center, which unlocks enhanced access to powerful research tools that normally require paid subscriptions. Visitors can use Ancestry, Fold3, MyHeritage, Find My Past, historical newspaper archives, and more, all at no cost.

In addition to online databases, the center also houses shelves of books and local history materials you simply won’t find through a Google search.

You Don’t Have to Be “From Here”

One of the biggest misconceptions about genealogy is that it’s only useful if your family has local roots. That’s not the case here.

The Family History Place regularly helps people research ancestors from across the U.S. and around the world. Whether you’re curious about immigration records, military service, Republic of Texas ancestors, or just want to know who came before you, the tools and guidance are here.

Many visitors come in with just a name or a vague family story and leave with real documentation and new leads to follow.

A Meaningful (and Surprisingly Addictive) Hobby

Genealogy has a way of pulling people in. What starts as casual curiosity often turns into a meaningful long-term hobby, one that connects families, preserves stories, and gives context to names that might otherwise be forgotten.

If you’ve ever thought, “I should really look into my family history someday,” this is one of the easiest and most welcoming places to start.

Planning a Visit

The Family History Place is open to the public and free to visit, though calling ahead is recommended so volunteers can be ready to help.

Sometimes the most interesting stories aren’t found in museums or history books — they’re waiting to be uncovered in your own family tree.
